What Makes Me Tick…

Picture
I migrated to the Northwest from Northern California in the late 1960s, ending up on Whidbey Island in Northern Puget Sound where I live today with my wife Maryann.

I began my creative endeavors in the 1970’s as a jeweler craftsman, working mainly with horseshoe nails. These early years cultivated my passion for metal work that has evolved into the signature copper brass patina pieces that I work with today.  Each piece is crafted by hand, with emphasis put on the small details.  I am self taught and have developed some of my own metal patinas.  I have incorporated bronze, copper and brass into my work.  All work is finished with an automotive 2 part clear coat.

I recently learned the old time riveting process and have turned a new page in my art work.  I have always been fascinated by Hard Edge Painting, such as the work of
Piet Mondrian.  Mondrain's art along with others has  inspired me to go further and not just turn a page but to start a new chapter.

I owe much of my success to my wife, Maryann and my Daughter, Kristen.  Both are talented and accomplished musicians who have encouraged me to pursue my craft.

The name Shock-N-Awe was given to me by my daughter Kristen.  After seeing some of my earlier metal work she said "Dad, I am either in Shock or in Awe of your work," hence the name Shock-N-Awe.  She is mostly shocked.

Living on Whidbey Island I have developed a special bond with the creatures and history of the Northwest that is reflected in my work.

My shop is my home away from home. Loving my work, I make the trek of 50 yards each morning and return in the evening. The most coveted tools in my shop are my mig welder, plasma cutter, sketch pad and coffee pot. That coffee pot keeps me out of the house.

I'm often asked "What Drives Me" and I answer, besides my 1956 Chevy, I have run out of room in my head for all my design ideas.... so its off to the shop each day to make room for more projects,,,

And I owe a great deal of gratitude to my friends that stop by, have a cup of coffee and get the gears in my head spinning

Please enjoy my website, and remember to always "Dream out Loud!"
